Pike County Memorial Hospital has a long standing working relationship with Pike Lincoln Vocational School. Students enrolled in Pike Lincoln’s LPN classes use PCMH to gain practical experience for the workplace. Students rotate between the Medical / Surgical floor, the Emergency Department, Radiology, Lab and Surgery to improve their skills and experiences.

Pike County Memorial Hospital was recently awarded a grant valued at $198,226 to implement a new position that will assist patients and their families with individualized assistance to help overcome health care system barriers and facilitate timely access to quality medical care. The position will be called a Patient Navigator and this individual will develop individual resource plans for patients seen at the two Eastern Missouri Health Services clinics in Louisiana and Bowling Green. The National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society and other well known health care organizations have used patient navigation to improve access and outcomes for patients. The U.S. National Institute of Health state the effects of these programs may help to improve access to quality care and could contribute to substantial progress in eliminating health care disparities. This model was chosen to best fit the needs that exist in Pike County that have made it difficult for patients to navigate the processes necessary to access and continue primary care. Referrals may be made to available resources that include, but are not limited to: sliding scale fees, Medicaid enrollment, local charity funding, WIC enrollment, pharmaceutical patient assistance programs, Medicaid transportation, local transportation council funding and local food pantries. Depending upon individual patient needs, evidence-based programming will be used to improve quality of life and self management of chronic conditions.
Funding for this position comes from Missouri Foundation for Health which is the largest non-governmental foundation in the state. MFH is a philanthropic organization whose vision is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves.
